Types of Cat Litter

Clumping Litter

The active ingredient in clumping litter is bentonite clay, and when this material comes into contact with moisture, it creates solid clumps. The clumps are easy to scoop, so cleaning is simple every day. It controls odours effectively and is a popular choice for cat owners.

Non-Clumping Litter

Non-clumping litter absorbs moisture but doesn’t form clumps. This needs frequent replacement, and it's often made of clay or other absorbent material. It may not be as simple, but it can save some families money.

Silica Gel Litter

Silica gel litter consists of small, porous crystals that absorb moisture and control odours. It is more durable and less frequent to replace than regular clay litter. But some cats may dislike how it feels.

Biodegradable Litter

Biodegradable litter is a better environmentally friendly option as it can be composed of natural ingredients; think wood, corn, wheat or recycled paper. It’s green and possibly compostable, depending on local regulations. It is available in both clumping and non-clumping types.

Scented Litter

This type of litter has extra scents that help to mask odours. Some cats prefer unscented because they have a very sensitive sense of smell, which may be why some owners prefer scented.

Unscented Litter

Unscented litter uses adsorbents like activated carbon or baking soda to control odours without any added fragrance. Excellent for cats with allergies or sensitive noses.

Lightweight Litter

Lightweight litter offers many of the same benefits as regular clay litter but is easier to carry and pour. It’s particularly useful for someone who struggles with heavy litter bags.

Pellet Litter

Most pellet litter is made from compressed wood, paper, or other environmentally friendly materials. It’s bigger, which is helpful for tracking, and it’s typically used with certain litter boxes.

Flushable Litter

Flushable litter, made from natural materials like corn or wheat, is biodegradable. It is soluble in water, so you can flush it down a toilet. Check local regulations to determine if it’s safe to flush in your region.

Dust-Free or Low-Dust Litter

This is an anti-allergy cat litter for cats and their owners with allergies, reducing dust from the air when using it. It’s most commonly available in clay, silica, or biodegradable types.
